Will I be able to play any old movie that I have, whether it is from a store or borrowed from a public library? So far I have been trying different free DVD players to play my movies on and got nowhere with all of them.

If the DVDs you're trying to play use a proprietary encoding technology, then it won't be possible to play them, regardless of the media player used.
Here are the tools you might want to try:
VLC Media Player: It can play a wide number of files. After installation, go to File > Open disc and select your disc.
DVDFab: This tool will attempt to decrypt the DVD to enable playback on all media players.
